Shey-Phoksundo is the largest National Park and
one of the few protected areas in the Trans-
Himalayan region. It has been successful in
preserving the unique trans- Himalayan
ecosystem, enriched with diversity of flora and
fauna. The national park covers second largest
lake- the Phoksundo. The flora of park includes
pine. Walnut, willow, oak, poplar and cypress,
pine spruce, juniper, wild rose are the
attractions of the area. The park is home to six
species of reptiles, 21 species of butterfly
including the highest-flying butterfly, Paralasa
Nepalaica in the world & snow leopard, grey wolf
and blue sheep. The area is a village of
monasteries among them; shey- monastery is the
most famous one. Thashung Gompa is another
monastery located near the lakeside that was
built about 900 years ago.
We start our trek from Jhuphal, after two small
flights to Nepalgunj on first day and to Jhuphal
on second day. The route goes through Dho Tarap
to high passes such as Numa-La & Baga-La and
very remote area of the country so we are
rewarded with excellent view of mountain and
virgin Tibetan culture on the way and finally
come to beautiful Shey Phoksundo Lake (3600m).
From here we will trek back to Jhuphal again.
