SHEY-PHOKSUNDO BOTANICAL TREKKING

Shey-Phoksundo is the largest National Park and one of the few protected areas in the Trans- Himalayan region. It has been successful in preserving the unique trans- Himalayan ecosystem, enriched with diversity of flora and fauna. The national park covers second largest lake- the Phoksundo. The flora of park includes pine. Walnut, willow, oak, poplar and cypress, pine spruce, juniper, wild rose are the attractions of the area. The park is home to six species of reptiles, 21 species of butterfly including the highest-flying butterfly, Paralasa Nepalaica in the world & snow leopard, grey wolf and blue sheep. The area is a village of monasteries among them; shey- monastery is the most famous one. Thashung Gompa is another monastery located near the lakeside that was built about 900 years ago.
