The term "biological diversity" or its
conjunct form "biodiversity" is used to
describe the number and variety of living
organisms and ecosystems on the planet. Nepal is
rich in such numbers and varieties of biological
species and their living spaces. The global
concern over the rapid loss of biodiversity
prompted the Earth Summit to promulgate the
international Convention on Biodiversity (CBD).
Nepal is one of the early countries to ratify to
the International Convention and the Ministry of
Forests and Soil Conservation (MFSC) is the
National Focal Point of CBD. The ministry has
formed a National Biodiversity Unit (NBU) to
facilitate and implement the CBD under the
guidance of the National Biodiversity Steering
Committee.
Botanically Nepal forms a transition zone
between the plants of the western Himalaya
(including western Asiatic and Mediterranean
elements) and the eastern Himalaya (with many
Sino-Japanese elements). Adding variety to the
mix are Tibetan Plateau (Central Asiatic) plants
from the north and humid tropical species of the
lowland plains (Terai) from the Gangetic plains
of India and further a field into Indochina.
Central to this is the Himalayan range itself, a
unique series of mountain chains formed by
geologically recent mountain building events.
These young massifs contribute to the diversity
of plants, and have provided barriers to and
corridors through which plants migrated during
the ice ages.
This trek is to commence at Budhanilkantha with
the purpose to be amazed with pleasant views of
the central and eastern mountain ranges,
heavenly views of sunrise and sunset and is good
introduction to Nepalese rural life. The end
point of the trek appears with two options
either at Nagarkot or Dhulikhel and Namobuddha.
Nagarkot, (2175m) is by far one of the most
popular destination. In the clear weather the
Himalaya range, stretching from Dhaulagiri in
the west all the way past Everest to
Kanchenjunga in the east, emerges from the
darkness to greet the happy visitor with its awe
inspiring majesty and beauty. Namobuddha is one
of the holiest sites for Buddhist in Nepal. It
is believed the ancients Buddha was born here as
prince. . It is an excellent trip for those who
wish to avoid a long strenuous trek or only have
time for a short and easy trek.
