BUNGEE JUMPING

Nepal's first bungee jumping site is situated 160m over the wild Bhote Koshi River, and located close to the Nepal-Tibet border, a three-hour bus ride from Kathmandu. As can be arranged on arrival in Kathmandu. As of now, there is only one agency offering this sport. The jump, at 160m, was designed by one of New Zealand's leading bungee consultants, and is operated by some of the most experienced jump masters in the business. It's mishap-proof. The agency takes safety "very, very seriously".

Location : Less than 3 hours outside Kathmandu by Ultimate Bungee Shuttle. You will travel the Arniko (Kathmandu/Lhasa) Highway to within 12km of the Tibet Border and the famous Friendship Bridge.

The Gorge : Ultimate Bungee Nepal takes place on a 166m wide steel suspension bridge over the Bhotie Kosi River.

The Bridge : Swiss designed, especially for bungee jumping with a 4x safety factor. The bridge has a loading factor of 250kg per running meter. This means that the bridge will hold 250 x 166 = 41,500kg or 4.5 tones. And those are Swiss measurements! * Over 6000 meters of steel wire was used to build the bridge * Longest suspension bridge in Nepal * The bridge joins two sides of a great valley. Before its construction, locals walked five hours to cross this river gorge.

BALLOONING IN NEPAL

To look up into the sky and see the towers of the Himalayas is awe-inspiring and certainly a valid and popular reason to come to Nepal. To walk among those mountains is more wonderful still, but to glide silently among them, this is perhaps the most thrilling of all. The adventure of hot air ballooning is now available in Kathmandu.

Once the balloon fills with enough hot air, it takes to the skies. From then on, it is the wind which decides where the balloon goes. Altitude is controlled by adding more or less hot air to the envelope and in this way, air currents can be ridden to reach a desired destination. Usually flights begin shortly after dawn, when winds are their calmest. Once the balloon is full and all systems double checked, the lines are let loose and the passenger basket is carried up over the morning fog and into the sun-lit skies. The balloon will float at about 1,200 to 1,500 m above the Valley, which will bring passengers close to 3,000m. From this altitude, the entire Himalayan range will be in sight -360 degrees of visibility is what the balloon in the air offers, as well as fantastic downward views of the Kathmandu Valley itself.

After 15 minutes or so at this altitude, enough time for people to take their photos and convince their jaws to close again, the balloon will descend for a gentle flight over the sights of the Kathmandu Valley. By the time the basket sets down again, roughly one hour after take-off, the balloonists will have experienced Kathmandu and the mighty Himalaya from an entirely new perspective.

BIKING IN NEPAL

Nepal’s another mode of mountain touring is mountain biking. There are plenty of dirt roads and trails to scenic destinations even close to Kathmandu. These 15 to 8 gear all terrain bikes can handle almost anything, and make climbing the hills to mountain lookouts a breeze. Mountain bikes are available for rent by the day or longer on-guided trips in and around the Kathmandu Valley. One speed Indian bicycles are also readily available.

Motorcycling is a fun slightly easier way to see the sights and can be rented for day or longer outings. A driver license is required.

Mountain Biking is a fast way to see rural Nepal. Nepal's extraordinary contours and numerous tracks and trails make it an ideal place for mountain biking. You not only climb up and down challenging mountain roads but also have wonderful opportunity to admire the magnificent scenery around. You can ride through rice fields, bike to the Terai towns. The mountain biking possibilities and streets are "endless" in Nepal. There are many mountain mud tracks that have created a paradise for the action biker.

A classic off-road adventure is the 70-km Scar Road that starts from Balaju to the west of Kathmandu city, traverses the hill resort of Kakani, Trisuli bazaar and Shivapuri, and then descends back to Kathmandu.

Another route is the two-day circular tour to Dhulikhel to the east of Kathmandu. You can combine this ride with a visit to the ancient townships of Bhaktapur, Namobuddha and Panauti which lie en route.

Yet another possibility is the 75-km ride on the adventurous, hair-raising Tribhuvan Highway to the hill resort of' Daman southeast of Kathmandu that offer even tougher challenges.

Furthermore, if you want to have a long and dedicated biking tour then you can choose your destination in and around any part of the country.

BOATING IN NEPAL

Boat is a common form of transportation in the lowland of Terai in Nepal where monsoon and floods are very common. This common form of transportation used by local can give the traveler a memorable experience. Floating on a small dugout canoe on the river Rapti of Royal Chitwan National Park or a comfortable boat on Fewa Lake of Pokhara, both have its own style of pleasure.

The boating can be done in various locations. Pokhara with many lakes is the most famous spot for boating activities. The city with famous lakes Phewa, Begnas and Rupa, provides enough space for boating experiences. Pokhara, set in a lush topical alley, with a backdrop of the Annapurna range not 25 kilometers away. Phewa Lake is Pokhara’s prime attraction for photographers, boaters and shore side strollers. Spend an hour or a day rowing (or being rowed by one of the local boats men) through out the many inlets, with a visit to the Varahi island temple. Fishing and swimming are also possible. From time to time, windsurfing boards air available on hire from one of the lakeside hotels or vendors. By afternoon, winds usually raise enough to fill a sail.
