Sikkim – The land of Hidden Paradise
Sikkim is a landlocked Indian state nestled in
the Himalayas bounded by three sovereign
nations, Nepal in the west, Bhutan in the east
and China's Tibet in the north and state of West
Bengal in the south. It has the smallest number
of people and second smallest land size (2,745
mi˛ (7,110-km˛)) of any state. The third highest
mountain in the world, Mt. Kanchanjunga (8586m)
is in Sikkim. The capital is Gangtok and other
big towns are Gayzing, Pelling, Yuksam and
Jorethang. The languages spoken are English,
Sikkimese, Lepcha, Tibetan, Nepali and Hindi.
Sikkim has been cut off from the outside world
for a long time. It was settled by Tibetans in
the 16th century and became a British
protectorate in 1890. Sikkim became part of
India in 1949 and became a state in 1975.
Sikkim's people have mainly Nepalese ancestry;
there are also Bhotias (Tibetan in origin) and
aboriginal Lepchas, who are mainly pastoral
nomads. The Nepalese practice Hinduism, but the
former chogyal (“King under the religious Laws”)
and the official class are Buddhist, and Sikkim
is known for its Buddhist monasteries. Tibeto-Burmese
languages and dialects are commonly spoken.
Sikkim is divided into 4 districts - in South
Districts main attraction is Ravangla. The East
District is where capital Gangtok is situated.
West District offers destinations such as
Pelling and Yuksom as well as beautiful treks
such as the one to Dzongri. The north district
bordering China has been recently opened to
tourists. Sikkim is just right destination for
such adventure-sport lovers. One can visit the
various places in Sikkim for the holiday and
various other purposes. In this beautiful state
of India, there are myriad adventure sports that
offer for the tourists who are thrill-seekers
and adrenaline-junkie, the state has lot to
offer starting from the trekking, water sports,

About Darjeeling
Darjeeling is the dreamland of the east and
boasts of extraordinary natural splendor. The
dense alpine trees, beautiful orchids, panoramic

hikes in Darjeeling. The panoramic glimpse of
Mt. Everest and breathtaking view of the sunrise
over Kanchanjunga are exhilarating. Darjeeling

About Kalimpong
The name, Kalimpong, has three different
origins. One, it means the place where the local
tribesmen gathered to organize field sports,
second, it takes it’s name from the Bhutanese
king’s minister’s stronghold and thirdly, it is
named after Kaulim, a fibrous plant found in
abundance in this region. Set in beautiful
wooded mountains Kalimpong is a remote hill
station about 80-kms from Darjeeling is known
for its beautiful orchids. The Tharpa Choling
monastery has a library of Tibetan manuscripts
and Thankas which can be visited. Kalimpong also
offers pleasant hikes and walks through rice
fields and tea fields around the town.
Main Attraction in Kalimpong
The Macfarlane Church a testimony of the
Scottish missionaries influence and a monument
of Kalimpong diverse history Dr. Graham's Home,
which was founded in 1900 by Dr. John A. Graham
is a sprawling educational institution built on
Deolo Hill north of the main township. It stands
testimony to Kalimpong European influence. It
has its own dairy, bakery, poultry farm and
vegetable gardens. It is fitting example of
community life an enthralling experienced
indeed. Zong Dhog Palri Fo Brang monastery
situated near Durpin Dara is another attraction
of the area. Tharpa Choeling monastery built in
1973, belongs to the yellow hat sect of lamas
and is another must see. It is situated on
Tirpai hill, about 2 km from the main town.
